PROJECT DESCRIPTION – Summit’s team of highly skilled engineers completed the MEP design for a 500,000SF fully automated frozen food distribution center. This is the largest fully automated freezer in North America. Summit coordinated with an international design team based in Switzerland for the facility’s automation system. The automated system within the facility quickly picks, stacks, and packages pallets of goods before they are distributed to grocery supplies around the country. The automated system significantly reduces labor costs for the owner in a very harsh environment. The high level of automation allows for most of the building lighting to be off during normal operation, while the automation system sorts and moves product through the facility. Summit’s design also included a loop-fed medium voltage distribution system providing redundant power pathways to the building. It also incorporated Automated Switchgear fed from a natural-gas powered microgrid generation system to ensure automatic power reliability from either the utility or microgrid. The automated switchgear system selects the most reliable source, between the utility feed and a 34-generator microgrid system.
